Evernote Backup Tool Overview

Overview

Evernote Backup Tool is a desktop application designed to help Evernote and Yinxiang (印象笔记) users create complete local backups of their notes. It downloads all your notebooks, notes, and attachments to a local SQLite database and can export them to ENEX, HTML, and Markdown formats.

Unlike Evernote's built-in export feature which requires manual selection of notes, our tool automates the entire process and ensures you have a complete backup of your entire account. The HTML export generates a searchable index page, and Markdown export is perfect for migrating to Obsidian or other MD-based note apps.

Key Features

Complete Backup

Download all notebooks, notes, tags, and attachments from your Evernote account to a local database.

Multiple Export Formats

Export notes to ENEX, HTML (with searchable index), and Markdown (Obsidian-ready). All formats support attachment separation.

Incremental Sync

After the initial backup, only download changed notes for fast and efficient updates.

100% Local

All data stays on your computer. No cloud servers, no data collection, complete privacy.

Multi-Platform

Native support for macOS and Windows. Works with Evernote International and Yinxiang (China).

One-Click Backup

Quick Backup button runs the entire backup process automatically with a single click.

How It Works

Evernote Backup Tool uses Evernote's official API to securely access your notes. The process is simple:

1

Initialize Database

Connect your Evernote account via OAuth (secure, password-free authorization)

2

Sync Notes

Download all notebooks, notes, and attachments to your local SQLite database

3

Export to ENEX / HTML / Markdown

Convert your backed-up notes to your preferred format for import into other applications or local browsing

Supported Export Formats

We support three export formats to meet different needs:

ENEX (Evernote Export)

ENEX is Evernote's standard export format. It's an XML-based format that preserves:

  • Note content with full HTML formatting
  • Embedded images and attachments
  • Tags and metadata
  • Creation and modification dates
  • Note location data (if available)

Many note-taking apps can import ENEX files, making it the ideal format for backups and migration.

HTML Export

HTML export creates a browsable offline knowledge base:

  • Auto-generated index page with search functionality
  • Browse by notebook, click to open individual notes
  • Attachments are separated and linked properly
  • Works offline in any web browser

Markdown Export

Markdown export is perfect for migrating to modern note apps:

  • Obsidian-ready folder structure
  • Compatible with any Markdown-based app (Logseq, Typora, etc.)
  • Attachments are extracted and linked
  • Plain text files you can edit anywhere
